IVSA Estonia is a member organisation of International Veterinary Students' Association (IVSA).
Our mission is to bring Estonian and international veterinary students together, improve knowledge of veterinary students, and to promote international relations and exchanges in Estonian University of Life Sciences.
We organize surgery club, excursions, lectures, soft skills training and many other events for our members.
Exchanges
One of the IVSA's objectives is to encourage veterinary students to network and co-operate with other vetschools, as well as raise awareness of different practices and veterinary curriculums in the world.
Group exchange is concept, where Exchange Officers arrange exchanges of two or sometimes multiple countries. This usually contains one week of cultural, social and educational activities in each participating country.
Group exchanges with us include university and city tour, fun cultural activities such as ice skating, snow tubing, sauna, visit to animal shelter and outdoor trips. We spend a day or two in Tallinn, the capital city. We organize a cultural evening where we cook traditional foods for our guests during the last evening.
We organize lectures and workshops on topics that participants are interested in, i.e. a lecture about wild animal handling and workshop about physical examination of cows in our university research farm, as well as different skills labs, i.e. surgery club.
ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS
We organize various events and activities for our members throughout the year. We have four themes, which we aim to frequently provide our members. Each of these is organized by our working groups.
SURGERY CLUB
Our monthly Surgery Club is a great place to practice suturing. In the beginners group you get to know basic principles of suturing, instruments and other materials under the guidance of older students.
Advanced group focuses on suturing techniques and different tissues, often with real material.
Surgery club organizes other skills labs, i.e. anesthesia lab, depending on interest.
EDUCATION
We organize lectures and excursions throughout the year. Lectures are related to current topics of veterinary medicine and depending on the interest of our members.
Excursions are made to different farms, clinics and other veterinary related sites to improve our members' knowledge on Estonian veterinary practices and the many aspects of veterinary medicine.
SOFT SKILLS LAB
Soft skills include verbal and non-verbal communication, emotional intelligence, ability to collaborate and negotiate, time and stress management skills, teamwork and leadership skills.
Soft skills are one of the most important things IVSA Estonia wants to promote.
This training is organized as motivational workshops, improvisation classes, teamwork exercises and various other activities.
CULTURE
We organize cultural events where our members can get to know each other and have fun outside of school. It's valuable for our members to be able to connect with other veterinary students and socialize.
Cultural events include board game nights, wine tasting, sports events, movie nights, etc.
CITY OF TARTU
Tartu is the second largest city in Estonia with a little over 93 000 inhabitants. Third of the population in Tartu consists of students, and it is one of the most important academic cities in Northern Europe. There are two universities in the city, The University of Tartu and Estonian University of Life Sciences (EMÜ).
The city has a unique atmosphere with colourful old buildings standing next to modern, new architecture. Many of the older buildings haven't been left to rot, but instead have been reutilised for new purposes, such as cafés, clubs, bars, shops and apartments.
Due to the large student population, the life in Tartu is very vibrant day and night, and there are many different events and activities every week. For the outgoing type, there's parties, pub crawls, karaoke nights and many other events. For athletic people, there are sports clubs and competitions. Tartu Tudengipäevad, Student Days, is an event week held twice a year, in spring and autumn, and it lights up Tartu in a completely different way.
One of the most notable attractions in Tartu is Raekoja plats, town hall square, which is the really the center of life in the city. During the warmer months, the square is filled with open terraces and the fountain of "Suudlevad tudengid", Kissing students, is a popular hangout spot for those who want to bask in the sun.
During Christmas, there's beautiful lights set around the town hall square and streets of Old Town, and Christmas market is set up for December on the town hall square.
The river Emajõe runs through the city of Tartu and a notable feature of the city is its division to the two sides. On the Kesklinn side of the city, is located most of the city centre and shopping centres, where as on the Ülejõe side is mostly apartments, nature and a pond right next to the river.
During spring and summer, the riverside attracts a lot of people to the parks and pop-up terraces.
